International Reading Association

The International Reading Association is a dynamic and diverse organization that includes classroom teachers, reading specialists, consultants, administrators, supervisors, college teachers, researchers, psychologists, librarians, media specialists, students, and parents. The Association has more than 90,000 members in 99 countries and represents over 350,000 individuals and institutions through its affiliated councils worldwide.

More than 1,250 councils and 42 national affiliates are the working foundation of the Association. They hold regular meetings and conferences and promote the goals of the Association at local, state, provincial, and national levels. More than 70 volunteer committees and 45 special interest groups explore subjects on a wide variety of issues and interests.

Mission

The International Reading Association seeks to promote high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction through studying the reading process and teaching techniques; serving as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of reading research through conferences, journals, and other publications; and actively encouraging the lifetime reading habit.

Goals

The Association is guided by five goals:

Goal 1: Professional Development - Enhance and improve professional development of reading educators.

Goal 2: Advocacy - Advocate significant reading and literacy issues.

Goal 3: Partnerships - Establish and strengthen alliances with a wide range of organizations, governmental, nongovernmental and community agencies, businesses, and industries.

Goal 4: Research Database - Create an informational database in support of the Association's mission.

Goal 5: Emerging Global Issues - Identify, focus, and provide leadership on emerging globally significant literacy issues.

The International Reading Association's leadership explores many strategies to implement these goals, including establishing more frequent communications with Association members; developing a stronger communications network with councils; encouraging a sense of community between teachers and researchers; ensuring public dissemination of information through press releases, position statements, and policy recommendations; and keeping Association members informed about worldwide literacy issues.

Global Issues

The Association provides leadership on emerging global issues through the development and implementation of support for literacy activities throughout the developing world. Programs are coordinated by the International Development Division, which in turn works closely with members of the Association's International Development Committees. A volunteer consultancy service was established to offer highly experienced professional educators to interested countries in the developing world. The International Reading Association's worldwide network of professionals actively supports teacher education, curriculum reform, classroom innovation, and the lifetime reading habit.
