YOUNG
AUTHORS' EXTRAVAGANZA
2006-2007
Purpose and Rationale:
The purpose of the Young
Author's Extravaganza is to provide students PreK-12 with an opportunity to
display their writing abilities, creativity and enthusiasm for written
language. Our intent is to showcase the
achievements of students and to encourage them to continue writing.
General Rules:
·
The student must
do all their own work for the Extravaganza.
·
Teachers may
help the students with the writing process, as this is a learning experience. Please encourage rewriting and editing.
·
To be entered in
the Modified category the student must be on a Language Arts IEP.
·
Individual
students my submit entries to the local council committee with the signature
of a sponsoring SDRC member.
·
Local Councils will
determine the local contest due date.
·
Local Councils may
submit three regular and three
modified entries per grade level to the State Committee.
·
All state
entries must have a completed nametag attached securely to the back
of the last page of the work and the
local President must sign each entry.
·
Entries are due
to the State Chairperson by
Winter Leadership or postmarked no later than January 20th.
·
All judging is
by blind review.
·
The decision of
the judges is final.
·
Winners are
notified via the mail, and all awards are given at the Annual SDRC Conference.
State winners: At the conference three winners from each
grade will be presented alphabetically by last name and will receive the same
honor for their writing talent.
Helpful Tips for a Successful
Extravaganza
·
The Six Traits
are used as a basis to judge entries.
·
General judging
will focus on the content of the piece; originality, creativity and adherence
to the rules. Other considerations that will be used are spelling, grammar and
neatness.
·
Clearly print student information in entirety
on the official name tag and secure
on the back of the last page of the
entry.
·
Staple
multiple pages in the top left hand corner only, please.
